Bench Player Sports’ College Football 2010 Top 25
Feb 1st, 2010 | By Brandon Cox | Category: FeaturedEvery site on the Internet has their own idea of next year’s top 25 teams; so we decided we would follow and have our own version.
1. Boise State- If the Broncos are going to make it to a national title game, this is their chance. An undefeated season here and they walk into the championship. Replacing one starting cornerback shouldn’t be too difficult for Chris Petersen. Boise State is my top choice for the 2010 season and rightfully so. Never name this team the underdog; they’ll prove you wrong.
2. Ohio State-The Buckeyes will likely show us something different from the typical Big Ten that we’re use to, an offensive arsenal. Terrelle Pryor is getting better and better and Tressel appears to be ready to take the leash off. They will need to replace a few players on defense but that rarely keeps Ohio State from playing good D.
3. Alabama- So the Crimson Tide will have a bit of rebuilding to do on defense and their offense didn’t seem really impressive most of this year, but I will be laughed at if I put them lower than number 3 in my preseason picks. Who knows, maybe Alabama will be a real SEC offensive powerhouse.
4. Virginia Tech- Replacing a large portion of the Defense will be difficult, but a well experienced offense should help them to achieve what they were hoping for at the beginning of this year. They should be favored to win the ACC and make an appearance in the BCS, though they do have a tough obstacle looming over them… The Boise State Broncos.
5. Oregon- Ed Dickson will be sorely missed in Eugene, but the Ducks are stacked for next season and as optimistic as ever. It may be likely to see them play in back to back Rose Bowls or even maybe a Fiesta Bowl national Championship Game. I know, I’m getting excited.
6. Texas- I feel like Garrett Gilbert is going to take a few sacks this season with some of his offensive line being replaced and needing to find a new go-to-guy at receiver. There will be a few great defensive players that have to be replaced as well, luckily the Longhorns don’t have much trouble getting new players.
7. TCU-The Horned Frogs were very well rounded this year and won’t need to work out many kinks heading into the 2010 season. They have a few players to replace but nothing devastating. They will be largely favored to win the Mountain West and likely make it to another BCS game.
8. Nebraska-With the offense all returning, they might show some good improvement in 2010. The Cornhusker’s defense will not likely be as ferocious with Suh and four others leaving but still a tough battle for any offense.
9. Iowa-The tough defenses in the Big Ten might tear apart this Hawkeye offense with a very inexperienced line but they should be solid everywhere else. It really is uncertain how the season will go for this team.
10. Miami-The Hurricanes showed they have amazing raw talent and with more experience behind it they can really prove something in 2010. Maybe The “U” will make a comeback in the new decade.
11. Pitt-My reason for putting the Panthers this high? Dion Lewis. Enough said. This guy will win a Heisman someday. Defense is my real concern for the Panthers seeing as how they didn’t have much of it this year and have to replace five or more starters. We’ll just see. It may take another season before this team is really set.
12. Wisconsin- This should be a really talented offense although they may be lacking on defense. They may have a chance to make a run for the Big Ten Title if they can play well on both sides of the ball and be consistent enough. They don’t have a terribly tough schedule but the top of the conference will be rough for any team.
13. Cincinnati- This looks like a bit of a rebuilding year to me, but they have some promising talent and not a severe lack in experience so I won’t drop them too far. Although, the Bearcats are going to be missing some great talent, both on the field and the sideline.
14. USC- Matt Barkley showed his natural talent and smart quarterbacking ability. The defense should see some large improvements and if you ask me, Taylor Mays will not be sorely missed. The Trojans can find a dozen defensive backs who could make a tackle 3 seconds after the play is over. Even if USC doesn’t reach premier dominance in the Pac 10 again, they will still do better in years to come than in this 2009 season.
15. Florida-can you say rebuilding year? I’m inclined to drop them lower than this with their coaching questions and all the inexperience coming in, but again, I want to be taken seriously.
16. Oklahoma-The Sooners will be alright with their offense. Several of the young players have had playing time already and there should be seven starters returning. Defense is another story, but then again, its not uncommon for young players to step up and surprise us.
17. Georgia Tech-We’ve seen what happens to this offense when put up against a real defense. They get stuffed. The yellow Jackets will have a lot of starters returning but they need to develop some passing to be a real contender.
18. Arkansas- This could prove to be an outstanding year for the Razorbacks who showed some surprising young talent in the 2009 season. Maybe not SEC champions but who knows. Its about time.
19. Penn State-It’s not a joke, The Big Ten is seriously looking like an offensive battle in 2010. I’m looking forward to seeing these teams average 35 points a game. The Nittany Lions are going to suffer on defense but shouldn’t drop out of the top 25 this season.
20. Oregon State-If Mike can figure out how his quarterback problem, the Beavers will be contending for the Pac 10 title for the third year in a row. The talent in Corvallis is in full bloom say for a quarterback.
21. LSU-What happens if Les Miles finishes with another so-so season in 2010? The stage is set for the Tigers to end up with 3 or 4 losses and to most LSU fans that’s unacceptable for three years in a row. I won’t mind it.
22. Stanford-Toby Gerhart is a big loss but other than that, The Cardinal is in good position to battle for the top of the Pac 10. Jim Harbaugh should be proud of how his team came together in 2009 and with almost everyone returning they can really have an impressive season in 2010.
23. Florida State- Bowden left the new coaching staff with a pretty good start as they will have a lot of experience on offense. This will be the beginning of a whole new era and it could be very productive. The Seminoles are looking promising although they are going to have a real test as they appear to have the toughest schedule in the nation.
24. Georgia- The Bulldogs are looking to improve from a disappointing 2009 season and if they can find someone to fill the void at quarterback they will be in a good position. A. J. Green will be back and expected to have an outstanding year.
25. Navy-The Midshipmen had a surprisingly good season and their productivity should continue into 2010. With seven returning starters on offense, including their quarterback and eight starters on defense they have good reason to be optimistic.
