Don’t Compare Steve Alford To Bob Knight

Mar 1st, 2010 | By Jake Doerr | Category: College Basketball

Steve Alford played for Bob Knight in Indiana from 1983-1987 but that doesn’t mean he has the same antics. This is the crap that has been circling around the sports world after he got caught cussing at BYU player Jonathan Tavernari because he was playing to physical on defense. Tavernari is a senior and has the very hard task at guarding the Lobos’ best player Darington Hobson with only 52 seconds left in the game there was a stoppage in play because of a time out. Hobson confronted Tavernari because he felt that he was getting a little to physical. This was a very phisycal game with two very good teams that ended with the Lobos coming out of the hostile environment with a 83-81 win. This is the handshake that followed the game.

The Mountain West Conference today reprimanded Alford for these comments. They feel he violated the conference’s sportsmanship rules and he did probably violate some rule but it also seems that Tavernari was in the wrong and should have been rightfully punished. I like the intensity and complete passion that Alford is showing his players. Knight and Alford are nothing a like. I think that Alford will need a lot more notches in his belt to be considered the next Knight. I think that the emotions of both of them was out of hand and the situation should have been dealt with differently but I like that out of my head coach and my best player.
