2010 NFL Free Agents

Feb 26th, 2010 | By Jake Doerr | Category: Featured

These are Bench Player Sports’ biggest NFL Free Agents. The star rating is out of five.

Free Agent: Quarterbacks

1.Kyle Orton (RFA), Broncos star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar2

The Broncos need to lock down Orton because even though he isn’t accurate past 10 yards he is an excellent game manager. You saw how crappy the Broncos were after he got injured. Unless they have a plan other then Simms they need to get a contract finalized now!

2.Matt Moore (RFA), Panthers star-ratingstar-ratingstar-rating

Moore was going to go into the offseason as an unknown name but, after leading the Panthers to 4 wins out of 5 games, which included wins over Vikings, Giants, and the Saints ( without Drew Brees). Just like the Broncos the Panthers need to lock him down as starter for next season. Moore finished the season with 8 touchdowns, 2 picks , and a 98.5 quarterback rating.

3. Jason Campbell (RFA), Redskins star-ratingstar-ratingstar-rating

It does look foolish to give a quarterback that lead his team to a 4-12 record as a three star free agent but, Campbell didn’t have that bad of a season actually he has his best statistical season of his career. He had career highs in completion percentage, yards, yards per attempt, touchdowns, and quarterback rating. I really think that Campbell has the goods to be a great quarterback and under Mike Shanahan I think he can do some real damage. The problem is the Redskins need to work on their two lines because Campbell has been sacked 81 times over the last two seasons. Is he a leader of men, that has yet to be seen but I do like what I see out of this young QB.

4.Bruce Gradkowski (RFA), Raiders star-ratingstar-ratingstar2

I know pigs must have flown, or hell froze over to have a Raider Quarterback as the forth best free agent quarterback, but shockingly enough Gradkowski played very well in his for starts. I don’t know if he is a starter but to have him on your team as a backup would be very wise for a team to take a look at him. He doesn’t have a very strong arm, but he is very accurate, smart and moble in the pocket and outside.

5. Tarvaris Jackson (RFA), Vikings star-ratingstar-rating

Nobody said Jackson didn’t have the physical tools to be a starting quarterback in this league but considering he isn’t a very accurate QB might scare of most teams. Like Gradkowski he has the ability to be a veteran reserve. I wonder if Favre had at least a little bit of the influence he had on Rodger grace itself on Jackson.  The Vikings will most likely retain Jackson and he will be able to put another year under the tutelage of Favre.

Other Free Agent Quarterbacks

Chad Pennington, Dolphins

Charlie Batch, Steelers

Kellen Clemens (RFA), NY Jets

Kyle Boller, St. Louis Rams

David Carr, NY Giants

Brodie Croyle (RFA), Kansas City Chiefs

Daunte Culpepper, Detroit Lions

Charlie Frye (RFA), Oakland Raiders

Troy Smith (RFA), Baltimore Ravens

Free Agent: Running Backs/Fullbacks

1.Leon Washington (RFA), NY Jets star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar2

He broke his leg last year but before that he was averaging 4.6 yards per carry and 24.1 yards per kickoff. He is speedy but he is really only a complimentary back. I hope he stays with the Jets because him and Shonn Greene would make a great one-two punch with their mix of power and speed.

2. Darren Sproles (RFA), San Diego Chargers star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-rating

He is similar to Washington but not as pure of a runner. He is very explosive but to little for my taste. If your a team that likes a player that is unstoppable in Madden then this is your guy but if you want and every down back he isn’t. Now with LT out of the picture Sproles becomes a must need sign for the Chargers. I only like Sproles if you limit his touches and a lot of them through screen passes. I think his ability to return kicks is more valuable then his ability to run the ball.

3.brownsb_logoJerome Harrison (RFA), Cleveland Browns star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-rating

The Browns decided to keep him a secret until the final three games of the season, I don’t know why it’s not like they made the playoffs. He rushed for 561 yards and five touchdowns and doing it all behind an inept offensive line. Holmgren should pay this young man handsomely just for those last three games.

4.Le’Ron McClain (RFA), Baltimore Ravens star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar2

McClain was outstanding this year , even was voted on the All-Pro teams. You know how good a blocking fullback is when your fellow running backs both increase their yards per carry when they run behind you. See him opening up huge holes for Ray Rice again next year.

5. Chester Taylor, Vikings star-ratingstar-ratingstar-rating

He has been a great Robin for Adrian Peterson for the past few years. He is a great between the tackle running back. He is getting on the older side but at 31 he is still a decent Robin. He is the perfect 3rd down back and expect him to be with the Vikings, they know his worth. He doesn’t get a lot of carries and that will help him last longer in the NFL.

Other Free Agent Running backs/ fullbacks

Cadillac Williams(RFA), Buccaneers

Jason Snelling (RFA), Falcons

LaDainian Tomlinson, Chargers

Brian Westbrook, Eagles

Kevin Faulk, Patriots

Mike Bell (RFA), Saints

LenDale White (RFA), Titans

Leonard Weaver (RFA), Eagles

Tony Richardson, NY Jets

Naufahu Tahi (RFA), Vikings

Lawrence Vickers (RFA), Browns

Free Agent: Wide Receivers

1.Brandon Marshall (RFA), Denver Broncos star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-rating

Marshall is a headcase and that is well documented but on the field he is fantastic. He is a premier receiver no matter who is throwing him the ball. The Broncos might trade him and a team will pick him up no matter his off field issues because of the talent he has on it.

2Miles Austin (RFA), Dallas Cowboys star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar2

Why did the Cowboys not re-sign this kid after his first dominate stretch last season. The one time that Jerry Jones decides to be stingy with his money it’s the wrong decision. He is so athletic and had 81 catches, 1320 yards, and 11 touchdowns last year that’s with starting after game 5 and became the Cowboys’ number 1 receiver. He can stretch the field and is one of the best young play makers in the league.

3. Vincent Jackson (RFA), San Diego Chargers star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-rating

He is a big target receiver with great ability to stretch the field. He has become a top wideout in the league and the Chargers are going to have to pay him a lofty price this offseason. Also I love the chemistry that has grown between him and Rivers and the Chargers will want to see where those two can take that.

4.Antonio Bryant, Tampa Bay Buccaneers star-ratingstar-ratingstar-rating

Like most wideouts Bryant is a complete diva that has loads and loads of talent. If a team is going to take a chance on Bryant they are going to need a veteran locker room presence to keep him in check. I really do want to see if Bryant can be consistent if he has good quarterback play. So the real question is he a No.1 or a No. 2 receiver.

5.Braylon Edwards (RFA), NY Jets star-ratingstar-ratingstar-rating

If the NFL brought back stick ‘em  Edwards might become a fantastic receiver , but until then he is just average. He still is a threat to go long and for the Jets that helped open up their run game. He does everything beautifully from running routs to going up and getting the ball at its highest point, but he has no hands.

Other Free Agent: Wide Receivers

Derrick Mason, Ravens

Steve Breaston (RFA), Cardinals

Davone Bess (RFA), Dolphins

Jason Avant (RFA), Eagles

Terrell Owens, Bills

Malcom Floyd (RFA), Chargers

Nate Burleson, Seahawks

Chris Chambers, Chiefs

Kevin Walter (RFA), Texans

Mark Clayton (RFA), Ravens

Muhsin Muhammad, Panthers

Free Agent: Offensive Line

1.Jahri Evans (RFA), New Orleans Saints star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-rating

Evans has always has been a great run blocking guard but this year he improved his pass protecting abilities. He was on the 1st All-Pro team and is a team first player, the kind of person you want in your locker room.

2.Jared Gaither (RFA), Baltimore Ravens star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar2

He got injured this season in New England, but he didn’t sustain any career ending injuries. It’s not everyday that a franchise left tackle shows up on the free agent market especially a 24 year old one. The thing I like about Gaither is that he is long an athletic and only has room to grow. If coaches can contain his penalties he can become a great left tackle.

3.Logan Mankins (RFA), New England Patriots star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar2

Mankins has allowed only 1.5 sacks in 3 of his 5 seasons in the NFL. He is a very durable player starting all 80 games in his 5 years after being draft by the Patriots. He is available but the Patriots would be naive to let a player with the ability that Mankins’ has.

4.Marcus McNeill (RFA), San Diego Chargers star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-rating

McNeill surrendered only 5 sacks last year and has only missed two games in his career. Look for McNeill to ask for more money then he deserves because he has been working under his rookie contract which wasn’t much since he was drafted in the 2nd round.

5.Bobby Williams, Cincinnati Bengals star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-rating

Williams has be an underrated guard his whole career, he is a fantastic run blocker. He is 33 and on the later end of his career but he did make 2nd All-Pro team. He is a great guy and it would be a big mistake for the Bengals to let him go.

Other Free Agent: Offensive Line

Kevin Mawae, Titans

Chad Clifton, Packers

Willie Colon (RFA), Steelers

Donald Penn (RFA), Buccaneers

Jammal Brown (RFA), Saints

Jermon Bushrod (RFA), Saints

Daryn Coledge (RFA), Packers

Eugene Amano, Titans

David Baas (RFA), 49ers

Free Agent: Defensive Line

1.Julius Peppers, Carolina Panthers star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-rating

Peppers often times doesn’t stay motivated out on the field but for a 30 year old he is still a very productive player. He  had 10.5 sacks last season marking the 6th time in his career to put up double digit sack numbers. He really wants to stand up in a 3-4 so we see if a team that runs that style of defense will purchase his services.

2.Elvis Dumervil (RFA), Denver Broncos star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-rating

Dumervil led the league in sacks with 17 because of the Broncos 3-4 transition where he can line up with his hand down or standing up in a linebacker position.  Dumervil is an excellent pass rusher but does struggle in run stopping defense and that is why the 3-4 is pivotal for him to succeed. The Broncos No. 1 priority should be retaining the short but very athletic Dumervil this offseason.

3.Aaron Kampman, Green Bay Packers star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-rating

Unlike Dumervil Kampman dominated in the 4-3 defense where he had 38 sacks between 2006 and 2008, but last year the Packers moved to a 3-4 and he was horrible. Then insult to injury (no pun intended) he was injured in a game against the 49ers. He will have to find a team that does run a 4-3 or look for Kampman not return to top form.

4.Ray Edwards (RFA), Minnesota Vikingsstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-rating

How good is Edwards, I don’t know because I think a lot of players could be good if they played along side Jared Allen and the two Williams. But if you read his stat line it shows that Allen’s side is a little easier to run towards. He is young and I hope he gets his chance to prove his worth even if it isn’t with the Vikings in the 2010 season.

5.Tony Brown (RFA), Tennessee Titans star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar2

He is a beast in the interior on the run and pass. He isn’t a liability to have in on all downs which makes him a very valuable player. He is quick yet very strong.

Other Free Agent: Defensive Linemen

Johnny Jolly (RFA), Packers

Marcus Spears (RFA), Cowboys

Adewale Ogunleye , Bears

Leonard Little, Rams

Darryl Tapp (RFA), Seahawks

Free  Agent: Linebackers

1.Karlos Dansby, Arizona Cardinals star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-rating

Is a change of scenery what Dansby needs to get back to prior form? I think so, he was disappointing this year. He is an amazing linebacker when he wants to and should have plenty of teams wanting his services. I like him but he was as motivated this year for some reason.

2.DeMeco Ryans (RFA), Houston Texans star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-rating

Ryan is very consistent and young. He is a two time Pro Bowler and has had over 100 tackles in all four of his seasons. Him and Cushing could be a fantastic LB duo. I hope he stays but money could be a big factor in him leaving.

3.Barrett Ruud (RFA), Tampa Bay Buccaneers star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar2

The Bucs would be foolish to let Ruud walk away when he is one of the best young inside linebackers in the league. He has great ball hawking instincts and he is a leader on the field. This guy is fantastic and I hope for the fans of Tampa the Glazer family opens up the check book for a truly great young talent.

4.Kirk Morrison (RFA), Oakland Raiders star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-rating

Morrison has been a leader on the Raiders for his entire 5 year career. He knows how to wrap up and has has 100 tackles all five years. He should be the No.1 priority of Al Davis now that they have tagged Seymour.

5.Shawn Merriman (RFA), San Diego Chargers star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar2

Can he get back to pre-injured knee ability because 4 sacks isn’t going to cut it. He isn’t explosive anymore  but hopefully he can return from the offseason 100%. He wouldn’t require a big contract for his services because he isn’t good enough to do that but if he does go back to the old Merriman that was viscous he can really help the Chargers or another team.

Other Free Agent: Linebackers

Thomas Davis (RFA), Panthers

D’Qwell Jackson (RFA), Browns

Rocky McIntosh (RFA), Redskins

Tully Banta-Cain, Patriots

Matt Roth, Browns

David Hawthorne (RFA), Seahawks

Stephen Tulloch (RFA), Titans

Free Agent: Defensive Backfield

1. Nick Collins (RFA), Green Bay Packers star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar2

Collins is a great Free Safety, maybe one of the best in the NFL. He plays very aggressive in pass defense and seems to know where the play will be. He had 6 interceptions this year and is even good in run support. The Packers need to lock him down for a long time.

2.Leigh Bodden, New England Patriots star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-rating

He had 5 interceptions and 18 pass breakups last year. He really helped out the terrible secondary for the Patriots. Any season would have been a good one considering his horrible time on the Lions. He only had a workout contract for the Patriots so he should get a raise from his current employer.

3.Bernard Pollard (RFA), Texans star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-rating

He was cut by the Chiefs right before the season and the Texans wisely picked him up. He had 4 interceptions and 102 stops.  He didn’t start until the 4th game of the season. He really helped on run defense and he should be back with the Texans next year.

4.Darren Sharper, New Orleans Saints star-ratingstar-ratingstar-ratingstar-rating

I hate the fact that Sharper had such a good season with the Saints but he is 34. He only has a couple years at best left in the tanks. I love how smart this guy is and he would be and upgrade to any team. He is a gambler and sometimes gets burned but the reward is much more then the risk.

5.Tramon Williams (RFA), Green Bay Packers

You know how good someone is when they can come in when a player like Al Harris goes down and nothing changes in the pass defense. Also as he got more known and a better reputation the referees did allow him to play a little more aggressive on receivers.

Other Free Agent: Defensive Backfield

Dunta Robinson, Texans

Carlos Rogers (RFA), Redskins

Richard Marshall (RFA), Panthers

Antoine Bethea (RFA), Colts

Roman Harper (RFA), Saints

O.J. Atogwe (RFA), Rams

Bernard Pollard (RFA), Texans

Most these players will get resigned by their current teams but there are a lot of good players in the open market and I will be interested who gets a hefty pay raise.
